Fin actuation, thrust vector control and landing leg mechanisms design for the RETALT VTVL launcher

Abstract To foster the competitiveness of European industry in global launcher market, need arose to build up necessary know-how on state-of-the-art vertical take-off landing (VTVL) concepts and corresponding technologies. In EU Horizon 2020 project RETALT (RETro propulsion Assisted Landing Technologies), VTVL approach applying retro is investigated for two-stage-to-orbit (TSTO) single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) reusable launch vehicles, these configurations are named RETALT1 RETALT2. framework investigation both reference performed several areas: aerodynamics, aerothermodynamics, flight dynamics guidance, navigation, control (GNC), as well thermal protection structures mechanisms. Focusing solutions 1 vehicle, Almatech contributes with design mechanisms actuate aerodynamic controls surfaces, retain deploy legs provide means dissipate energy during touch-down. Demonstrators mechanism also built project. addition above activities, proposes thrust vectoring solutions. This paper presents an overview activities results obtained so far.
